How to Choose the Right Paver for Your Driveway

Your driveway takes more abuse than any other surface on your property. Heavy vehicles, road salt, freeze-thaw cycles, plows scraping across it every winter. The paver you choose needs to handle all of that and still look good ten years from now.

This guide breaks down the key decisions so you can pick the right driveway paver for your budget, your climate, and your style.

Concrete Pavers vs. Natural Stone

Most driveways on the South Shore use one of two materials: concrete pavers or natural stone.

Concrete pavers are manufactured under high pressure and come in consistent sizes, shapes, and colors. They are cost-effective, widely available, and come in dozens of styles. Brands like Belgard, Techo-Bloc, Unilock, and Cambridge all produce concrete pavers rated for vehicular traffic.

Natural stone pavers — granite, bluestone, travertine — offer a look that concrete cannot replicate. Each piece is unique. They tend to cost more upfront, but many homeowners feel the aesthetic payoff is worth it. Granite cobblestones, for example, have been used on New England roads for over a century. They last.

The bottom line: concrete pavers give you more options at a lower price point. Natural stone gives you unmatched character and longevity.

Interlocking vs. Slab Pavers

Interlocking pavers lock together like puzzle pieces. This design distributes weight across the entire surface, making them ideal for driveways. When one paver cracks or shifts, you can pull it out and replace it without tearing up the whole driveway. That is a major advantage in Massachusetts, where frost heave is a fact of life.

Slab pavers are larger, flatter pieces laid side by side. They create a clean, modern look. However, large slabs are more prone to cracking under heavy loads unless they are properly supported with a thick compacted base. For driveways, slabs work best as accents or borders rather than the primary surface.

For most driveway applications, interlocking pavers are the stronger choice.

Brand Comparisons

We stock and recommend products from several leading manufacturers. Here is how they compare.

Belgard offers a wide range of styles and price points. Their Mega-Arbel and Subterra Stone lines are popular for driveways. Belgard also backs products with a lifetime warranty.

Techo-Bloc is known for premium aesthetics and innovation. Their Blu 80 Smooth and Para HD lines handle vehicular loads well. Techo-Bloc pavers tend to sit at a higher price point, but the finish quality is excellent.

Unilock manufactures some of the strongest concrete pavers on the market. Their EnduraColor technology resists fading. The Umbriano and Artline series are solid driveway options.

Cambridge delivers good value. Their ArmorTec surface treatment adds stain and fade resistance. Cambridge is a strong mid-range choice for homeowners and contractors alike.

Thickness and Load Ratings

Driveway pavers need to be thick enough to handle the weight of vehicles without cracking. The industry standard for residential driveways is a minimum thickness of 60mm (about 2-3/8 inches). For driveways that see heavier traffic — delivery trucks, trailers, equipment — go with 80mm (3-1/8 inches) pavers.

The base matters just as much as the paver itself. A properly compacted gravel base of 8 to 12 inches is essential in our region. Skimping on the base is the number one reason driveways fail.

Climate Considerations for New England

Massachusetts winters test every material. Here is what to keep in mind.

  • Freeze-thaw resistance. Look for pavers with low water absorption rates. The less water a paver absorbs, the less likely it is to crack when that water freezes.
  • Salt tolerance. Road salt and de-icers can damage some pavers over time. Concrete pavers with sealed surfaces hold up better. Natural granite is naturally salt-resistant.
  • Frost heave. Interlocking pavers flex with the ground and settle back into place. Poured concrete cracks. This alone makes pavers the better choice for New England driveways.
  • Color retention. UV exposure and salt can fade colors. Brands with through-body color or surface treatments like Unilock EnduraColor and Cambridge ArmorTec hold their look longer.
